School Security Officer
Non-Exempt
Compensation - Salary Range: - $20.2601 - $34.0907/ hour ( Grant funded position; continuation dependent on available funds, renewable annually through 2030)
Primary Function
The School Security Officer (SSO) supports a safe, secure, and orderly learning environment by monitoring school premises, implementing preventative safety practices, responding to incidents, and assisting school administrators in enforcing School Board policies. The SSO performs duties in accordance with Code of Virginia � 9.1-101 and Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) regulations, with an emphasis on safety, de-escalation, and student-centered practices.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Be at least 21 years of age.
- Must meet eligibility requirements for DCJS School Security Officer registration certification
- Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
- Experience in security, law enforcement, military, or related field preferred.
- Fingerprint-based criminal background check (CCRE and FBI) within 30 days of hire.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Understanding of child and adolescent development.
- Knowledge of DCJS regulations, school safety standards, and applicable Virginia laws.
- Knowledge of instructional procedures and practices, as well as thorough knowledge of the attendance policies and overall rules and regulations of the York County School Division.
- General knowledge of police, juvenile, and court procedures.
- Ability to establish and maintain a professional working relationship with students, staff, and faculty in a variety of situations and possess strong interpersonal, communication, and conflict resolution skills.
- Demonstrated skill in investigation, law enforcement, and security techniques (preferred).
- Skill in documenting incidents and preparing clear, objective reports
- Focus on building positive relationships, communication skills, crisis de-escalation and physical intervention for safety.
- Must possess the ability to acquire knowledge of School Board policies and procedures and student rights and responsibilities.
- Ability to remain calm and make sound decisions in high-stress situations.
- Knowledge of crisis prevention, intervention, and de-escalation techniques.
- Ability to identify and respond proactively to potential safety concerns
- Ability to maintain safety while respecting student rights and dignity
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and security-related systems.
Additional RequirementsRequired Training (Division & DCJS)
- DCJS entry-level certification training and successful completion within required timeframe.
- First Aid/CPR/AED certification (as required).
- De-escalation training
- Once hired, an SSO applicant Must complete all YCSD required employee training (in-person and online).
Certification & Regulatory Requirements (DCJS Compliance)
- Must obtain and maintain active DCJS School Security Officer registration
- Must complete DCJS Compulsory Minimum Entry-Level Training and meet required passing standards
- Must complete all required DCJS in-service training and recertification
- Must operate within the defined scope of authority under the Code of Virginia, recognizing that SSOs are not sworn law enforcement officers
Performance Responsibilities
- Patrol school buildings and grounds to deter unsafe activity and maintain visibility
- Detect, investigate and report unauthorized or suspicious persons, vehicles and activities.
- Monitor assigned areas to prevent the destruction of personal and public property.
- Prepare accurate and timely incident reports
- Use surveillance systems and security technologies appropriately
- Responds appropriately to potential threats to building, staff, or student safety to promote a secure learning environment.
- Support emergency operations (lockdowns, evacuations, reunification)
- Collaborate with law enforcement and emergency responders as appropriate
- Assist administrators with investigations of policy violations
- Assist administrators and staff in crisis and emergency situations.
- Respond to emergencies and incidents in accordance with division and DCJS protocols
- Assist with supervision of student movement and large group activities
- Conduct authorized searches and operate screening equipment in accordance with law and policy.
- Required to work evenings and weekends as needed to provide security for meetings, student activities, athletic events and special programs as requested.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Reports to: Building Principal (primary), Assistant Principals (secondary), Supervisor of School Safety & Emergency Management
Terms of Employment: Ten-month position. Opportunities for overtime may be available. Salary per School Board Pay Plan.
Evaluation: Performance will be evaluated in accordance with School Board policy and administrative regulations for non-licensed personnel.
