1st Grade Teacher

Location: 3335 W Flower St, Phoenix, AZ 85035

Start: 7/20/2026

Compensation Range: $48,331.25 - $54,571.89 annually (DOE)

Academies of Math and Science (AMS) is a network of high-performing K–8 public charter schools committed to academic excellence, college readiness, and equitable access to high-quality education for students in historically underserved communities.

AMS is seeking a passionate and nurturing 1st Grade Teacher to provide foundational instruction in early literacy, numeracy, and social-emotional development. This role is critical in building the academic and behavioral foundations that set scholars up for long-term success.

AMS teachers are collaborative professionals who believe all scholars can achieve at high levels through structured instruction, strong classroom culture, and consistent data-driven decision-making.

This role requires a teacher who is committed to supporting students in Title I communities while maintaining high academic expectations and fostering a joyful, structured, and engaging learning environment for young learners.

Key Responsibilities

Instruction & Student Achievement

  • Deliver rigorous, standards-aligned instruction in foundational literacy and mathematics aligned with AMS curriculum frameworks.
  • Build strong foundations in phonics, reading comprehension, writing, and early numeracy skills.
  • Design engaging, developmentally appropriate lessons that promote curiosity, exploration, and a love of learning.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse needs of early learners, including multilingual students and those at varying skill levels.
  • Use formative and summative assessment data to guide instruction and provide targeted interventions.

Classroom Culture & Student Support

  • Establish and maintain a structured, warm, and high-expectations classroom environment.
  • Implement PBIS and preventative strategies to support positive student behavior.
  • Support students’ academic, behavioral, and social-emotional growth.
  • Teach and reinforce routines, procedures, and social skills appropriate for early elementary learners.
  • Foster independence, confidence, and collaboration among students.

Collaboration & Professional Growth

  • Participate in weekly professional development and professional learning communities.
  • Collaborate with grade-level teams and instructional leaders to improve instructional practices and student outcomes.
  • Contribute to school-wide initiatives focused on early literacy and academic achievement.
  • Use student data and reflective practices to continuously improve instruction.

Family Engagement

  • Communicate regularly with families regarding student progress and academic expectations.
  • Lead parent-teacher conferences and maintain strong home-school partnerships.
  • Provide families with strategies and resources to support literacy and learning at home.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must meet one of the following requirements:

  • Valid teaching certification in Elementary Education or a related subject area, OR
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field of study (e.g., Education, Child Development, or similar field), OR
  • Minimum of three (3) years of K–8 teaching experience

Additionally, candidates must:

  • Demonstrate strong classroom management skills, especially with early learners
  • Show commitment to serving Title I and multilingual learner communities
  • Possess strong instructional skills in early literacy and foundational math
  • Demonstrate collaboration, professionalism, and initiative in a team-based environment
  • Pass required background checks and obtain an Arizona IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card
