Job Description

The main purpose of this position is to provide strategic leadership and guidance to the Group Security Management Department (GSMD), encompassing oversight of comprehensive, integrated multidisciplinary security management function across the South African Reserve Bank Group (SARB) Group.

The successful candidatewill be responsible for the following key performance areas:

  • Provide leadership and strategic direction to all the SARB Group security functions.
  • Monitor and advise on local and international developments regarding security threats, vulnerabilities and trends and implement appropriate counter measures.
  • Lead and oversee the strategic SARB Group response to security incidents and exposures.
  • Provide capability to execute security operations.
  • Liaise with the relevant state security organs, including financial and cash sectors, on matters of strategic interest.
  • Develop capable security staff and provide appropriate technology, processes and equipment that will facilitate optimal security services.
  • Provide and lead the implementation of strategies, policies, standards and compliance relevant to the activities of the SARB in respect of the cash industry.
  • Direct and coordinate the department’s financial and budget to fund activities and increase efficiencies.

To be considered for this position, candidates must have:

  • an Honours degree in Security, Security Risk Management or an equivalent NQF8 qualification; and
  • 13−15 years’ experience in security, law enforcement and/or security risk management, preferably in a high-value asset sector, of which at least 6 years should have been in a senior general management position.

The following will be an added advantage:

  • a general management qualification.

Additional requirements include:

  • sound knowledge of strategy development, general management, financial management, governance and risk management as well as high value asset distribution;
  • in-depth working knowledge and an understanding of the management of diversity, strong leadership qualities and the ability to handle pressure and resolve conflict;

Section 224 of the Constitution of South Africa states the mandate of the SARB as follows:

The primary object of the South African Reserve Bank is to protect the value of the currency in the interest of balanced and sustainable economic growth in the Republic.

The South African Reserve Bank, in support of its primary objective, must perform its functions independently and without fear, favour or prejudice.
