Job Description

Assist with visual and tactile inspections of bridges and highway structures to discover deterioration, damage, and defects that would affect the life, serviceability and safety of the structure.

How you will contribute:

  • Equipment Operation: Operate specialized inspection equipment and vehicles.
  • Inspection Data and Reports: Collect structural data and dimensions of components. Prepare and distribute structural inspection reports and related documentation. Check information in paper and electronic inspection report files and update as necessary.
  • Inspections: Assist with visual and tactile inspections of bridges and highway structures to discover deterioration, damage and defects.
  • Inventory: Assist with creation of new inventory records and update existing structure inventory and assessment data in automated database system.
  • Job Safety: Determine and demonstrate proper work site protection techniques. Ensure workplace safety by identifying workplace hazards and making suggestions for improvement. Wear proper personal protection equipment. Maintain current knowledge of safety rules, regulations, laws and procedures. Ensure equipment is used properly and safely. Apply MUTCD for detours, lane closures, work zones, etc. Maintain clean, orderly, and safe work environment. Follow VDOT safety regulations and practices.

  • Ability to physically perform hands-on inspection of bridges and structures and use required equipment.
  • Ability to prepare and, or draft structural drawings and sketches.
  • Ability to prepare reports, enter data, update and maintain files.
  • Ability to read and interpret bridge and structure plans and specifications.
  • Ability to use specialized inspection instruments and tools.
  • Ability to work at heights, over and in water, in confined spaces, in proximity to heavy traffic and in inclement weather.
  • Knowledge of and skill in the application of engineering math.
  • Knowledge of bridge maintenance and repair procedures and inspection methods.
  • Knowledge of common bridge types and components.
  • Skill in the use of computers and software applications.

  • Minimum Qualifications:
  • Ability to diagnose causes of damage and deterioration to bridges and structures.
  • Ability to follow safety practices and procedures and use required equipment.
  • Ability to prepare and, or draft structural drawings and sketches.
  • Ability to prepare reports, enter data, update and maintain files.
  • Ability to read and interpret bridge and structure plans and specifications.
  • Ability to use specialized inspection instruments and tools.
  • Knowledge of and skill in the application of engineering math.
  • Knowledge of common bridge types and components.
  • Skill in the use of computers and software applications.
  • Valid driver's license.

  • Additional Considerations:
  • A combination of training, experience, or education in Engineering, Engineering Technology or related field desired.
  • Completion of an FHWA-approved course in safety inspection of bridges.
  • Experience in bridge maintenance and repair or structural inspection.
  • Experience using a PC to prepare reports, enter data, and maintain databases and files.
  • Proficiency in MS Office and CAD.

    The Commonwealth of Virginia is located in the South Atlantic region of the United States. It was the 10th state to be admitted to the Union on June 25, 1788.     The narrative history of the Commonwealth of Virginia often begins with the founding of Jamestown in 1607, near what is now modern day Williamsburg, Virginia.     The modern government of Virginia is nearly identical in structure to the federal government, and is divided into 3 branches, these being the executive, legislative, and judiciary branches. The Virginia General Assembly is comprised of the 100-member House of Delegates and the 40-member Senate. A governor and lieutenant governor are elected every 4 years. Governors cannot be elected to or serve consecutive terms. Virginia’s judicial system consists of the Supreme Court of Virginia and the Court of Appeals of Virginia, the Circuit Courts, and the lower General District Courts and the Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Courts. Virginia has 13 electoral votes in presidential elections, and possesses 11 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives.
