Job Description

Interprets communication from English to Spanish and Spanish to English between the judge, attorneys, defendants, and witnesses during legal proceedings in Felony Court at the Frank Crowley Courthouse. Responsible for eliminating language barriers in court proceedings ensuring effective communication. Uses expertise in consecutive and simultaneous interpretation to ensure clear and accurate communication. Interprets communication from English to Spanish and Spanish to English between the judge, attorneys, defendants, and witnesses during the legal proceedings. Provides simultaneous and consecutive interpretation as needed for short proceedings in open court. Expedites and facilitates communication to ensure efficient and effective functioning of the court. Interprets proceedings from English to Spanish and from Spanish to English during agreed pleas, examining trials, bond hearings, probation revocations, pre-trial hearings, admonishments, competency interviews, indigent defense interviews for appointment of attorney, victim impact statements and attorney/client interviews and is not intended to replace a trial interpreter. Adheres to strict ethical guidelines, as well as confidentiality and impartiality. Conveys the message precisely without omitting, adding or modifying the statements. Maintains the original language register of the speaker. Performs other duties as assigned. Education, Experience and Training: Education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in English, Spanish, Liberal Arts or related field and three (3) years’ experience in legal interpretation. Special Requirements/Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: A Texas Court Interpreter Master License is required. Must be fluent in English and Spanish with the ability to read, write, speak and translate Spanish and English. Knowledge of legal terminology and court procedures and protocols. Knowledge of ethical standards for court interpreters. Knowledge of regional dialects, slang and idioms in both languages. Physical/Environmental Requirements: Standard office environment.
