Job Description

Designs, reviews, evaluates, validates, implements and maintains laboratory technical and quality procedures. Consults with users and develops requirements for new or enhanced assays and systems and creates specifications and recommendations. Ensures adherence to technical processes and procedures.

Management Scope: Oversees section quality management activities. May supervise professional, technical, and administrative personnel involved in the development of new and/or maintenance and operation of existing laboratory technical and quality operations.

Designs, reviews, evaluates, validates, and implements new analytical methods and quality control/quality assurance programs; assesses user needs, develops technical strategies and goals.

Maintains laboratory technical and quality procedures; monitors laboratory services for technical compliance with national accreditation standards.

Troubleshoots technical and quality performance issues related to casework, instrumentation, and laboratory processes to identify resolution or opportunities for process improvement.

Coordinates user requirements and section technical capabilities to ensure efficient, effective and quality delivery and technical operation of laboratory systems.

Fulfills various academic responsibilities including scientific research and publication, teaching, and lectures.May provide consultation and interpretation to medical examiners, district attorneys, law enforcement officials and others in the areas of forensic testing as it relates to forensic chemistry or physical evidence.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Education, Experience and Training

Education and experience equivalent to a Ph.D. in physical sciences, biology, chemistry, forensic science or in a job-related field of study. Must possess the coursework necessary to meet mandatory licensing and/or accreditation requirements. Must be accepted by the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas.

Advanced degree level knowledge of the principles and techniques of genetics and molecular biology.

Special Requirements

Ability to operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and/or repair specialized laboratory instrumentation; skilled in the use of standard laboratory techniques; working knowledge of chemical and biological safe handling procedures; ability to effectively communicate, both verbally and in writing, and establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, departments and the general public. Will be required to provide a copy of 10-year driving history. Must maintain a good driving record and remain in compliance with Article II, Subdivision II of Chapter 90 of the Dallas County Code. Must possess reliable transportation.

Physical/Environmental Requirements

Work is performed in a laboratory environment with potential exposure to biological and/or chemical hazards. The employee is required to follow good laboratory practices and safety precautions including the use of personal protective equipment. Must possess manual dexterity and visual acuity sufficient to accurately execute standard protocols. Requires prolonged sitting, standing, walking, and the ability to lift files, boxes, and other materials up to 50 lbs., unassisted.
