Job Description

1.0 FTE High School English/Social Studies Teacher @ Colony High School

Site specific information: Be able to teach all grade levels in English and Social Studies.

To teach 9-12th grade English and Social Studies classes through a variety of instructional techniques both required and supplementary subject matter and skills within district curriculum and create an excellent classroom environment which is conducive to learning for each individual student. Strong English and Social Studies background and/or experience preferred. Ability to work with High School students and be a positive part of a strong English and Social Studies team and school team overall.

Qualifications: Alaska Teaching Certificate-Type A and Bachelor's degree. Experience with trauma sensitive schools preferred. Endorsement for assigned teaching courses preferred.

Essential Duties

1Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at times designated by the principal.2Plans a program of study to meet the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the students and adheres to the District curricular objectives.3Displays a conceptual knowledge of the content being taught.4Selects and/or creates teaching materials selected to fit into the instructional plan.5Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students. Alters teaching strategy to meet the needs of the students and is conscious of behavioral clues coming from students.6Communicates information, explanations, justifications, expectations, directions, and evaluations to students, teachers, parents, other district staff, and community members with efficiency and clarity.7Prepares for classes assigned and shows written evidence of preparation upon request of principal.8Establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects and communicates these objectives to students. Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and in harmony with the goals.9Employs a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media; consistent with the physical limitations of the location and the needs and capabilities of individuals or student groups involved.10Assesses the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provides progress reports as required. Creates or selects, and administers suitable tests for summative, formative, and diagnostic purposes.11Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.12Maintains accurate and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulations.13Assists administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct in school. Develops reasonable rules of behavior, procedures for discipline, and maintains order in the classroom in a fair and just manner within the classroom. Encourages students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior.14Makes provisions for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when requested.15Supervises and plans purposeful assignments for volunteers and assists the principal in supervising and evaluating classified staff as requested.16Strives to maintain and improve professional competence, attends staff meetings, and serves on committees.17Other duties as assigned by principal.


Physical Requirements: LIGHT WORK: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligable amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for sedentary work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for light work.
