Mechanical design and system development of refueling subsystems that integrate multiple components such as multiple visual sensors, robot mechanisms and target measurement/robot control computers. Visual sensors include a wide variety of visible and infrared cameras, laser ranging devices (LRF), LiDAR and lighting systems. The robot mechanism consists of several joint link mechanisms, capture mechanism, refueling end-effectors and their actuators.
This position will be responsible for the following tasks

  • Design the integration of the optimal set of components to achieve the satellite system's mission in cooperation with the satellite system design and development team and the component development team.
  • Design and analyse the interfaces and specifications between devices.
  • Manage mechanical system Interface Control Documents (ICDs) to and from other subsystems.
  • Develop a validation plan for the capture system.
Plan, prepare and conduct verification tests such as vibration tests, thermal vacuum tests and or thermal cycling tests. Evaluate test results and reflect them in the design.
  • Carry out the mechanical assembly of the acquisition system in cooperation with the production department.
  • Prepare specifications for the purchase of equipment and components and subcontract design and manufacturing.
  • Conduct technical coordination with suppliers and manufacturers regarding specifications.
  • Performs technical coordination and progress management with design subcontractors.

  • Basic knowledge of robotics (actuator, multi-joint arm)
  • Proficiency in English reading comprehension to understand technical documentation
  • Practical experience in planning, preparing, carrying out and evaluating structural and mechanical tests
  • Have a commercial business mindset (e.g. short-term development, low cost and supply chain development).

<Desirable>

  • Development experience using ROS
  • Development experience using MATLAB, Simulink, and Simscape
  • Practical experience in planning, conducting and evaluating structural and motor drive tests (especially vibration tests).
  • Experience in spacecraft development.

About Astroscale

Founded in 2013, Astroscale is the global leader in on-orbit servicing, dedicated to the secure and sustainable development of space for the benefit of future generations. The company provides trusted and value-added solutions for government and commercial clients from their geography of choice, to drive the long-term, circular space economy. Astroscale is also collaborating with government and commercial stakeholders to develop norms, regulations, and incentives that promote the sustainable growth of space.

Since its first successful launch in March 2021, Astroscale has proven rendezvous and proximity operations technologies in orbit during the ELSA-d and ADRAS-J missions, establishing the company as a leader in on-orbit servicing. Astroscale spacecraft have been selected for pioneering missions with JAXA, the U.S. Space Force, the European Space Agency, the UK Space Agency, and Eutelsat OneWeb. As more satellite operators adopt on-orbit servicing to routinely inspect, service and remove, the potential of a circular space economy — and a future of no waste in space — is being unlocked.

Headquartered in Japan, Astroscale has a global presence with subsidiaries in the United Kingdom, the United States, France, and Israel.
